Property acquisition underway for new Highway 7 between Kitchener and Guelph
"I'm pleased that they're actually purchasing the properties and it's in the capital forecast for the province," Mayor Carl Zehr said. "But I think that we need to obviously keep their feet to the fire on it, and it is a minority government so it is important that all parties would make sure that that commitment is kept."
The proposed alignment of the new four-lane highway would run east from the expressway at Wellington Street north of Victoria Street, over the Grand River into Bridgeport and tie into Highway 6 north in Guelph.
There would be five interchanges in Kitchener, at Wellington Street, Riverbend Drive, Victoria Street, Bingemans Centre Drive and Bridge Street.
Zehr had requested the update to get information on a tweak to the route at Bridge Street.
Coun. Berry Vrbanovic said the longer it takes to get the new highway in place, the more frustration it means for residents and impact on businesses. "We know that that road is (at) overcapacity now, and obviously when you have congestion and delays you end up impacting on people's quality of life, it has environmental impacts," he said. "There's no doubt that it impacts business from a goods point of view."
Both Zehr and Vrbanovic said their concern is ensuring the next provincial government maintains its commitment to completing the highway.
"I'll be looking to ensure that with a provincial election in the offing, that whoever is going to be in government … that the commitment to seeing it go forward in a timely manner will continue to be there," Vrbanovic said.
